Well after my first article ran about Ludacris we have received quite a few letters to the editor with other students venting about their money being spent on something they did not get to have any voice in.
In my last column I noted that the e-mail to vote was sent out on May 2, the last week of school during finals, for students to voice their Top 5 choices for entertainers on campus.
The e-mail that was sent out to everybody’s z-accounts in my opinion was a half-assed way of doing a comprehensive vote.
The SGA’s first sign that something had gone wrong should have been that only a dismal 400 people voted out of the 12,000 students on campus.
Why would so few people vote for something that concerned them and their money?
Well, during the last week of school many students are busy with the crazy things called finals, and were finished with everything the class and had no reason to check their z-account.
“I was never aware that there was a need to check my z-account for anything like that,” said Adrienne Cline a junior journalism major.
Not only did many ETSU students not know to check their z-account for the email, but also many ETSU students never received the e-mail.
Some may argue that many students just neglected to vote altogether and did not care about voting or not.
When it comes to money people care a great deal where their money is going, and I believe the majority of ETSU students care where their $20 is going.
This is also supposed to be a Homecoming concert. For some reason I do not believe that many alumni are going to be coming home to see Ludacris.
Ludacris is not an artist that really appeals to the masses or varying age groups.
Personally I would rather take the $85,000 that is being spent on Ludacris and send it to help the people affected by Katrina. This would be a much better cause and I think more people would have voted for this than Ludacris.
I know there is not too much I can do to stop Ludacris from coming, and I would not be so mad if the majority of students on campus had gotten a chance to vote and voted for him.
Even the majority of the 400 that got to vote did not vote for Ludacris.
As a matter of fact he was 17th on the list of 22, so you do the math on around how many people voted for him.
I have been hearing rumors that next semester the SGA has decided to hold a “pop” concert on campus for Homecoming.
I just hope that they do not go about this the same way again, and that students are not held to voting for artists like Kelly Clarkson and Justin Timberlake while voting for this “pop” concert.
