Dear Editor,
In response to Jenkins’ article on the Ludacris concert, first, SGA did not approve funding for the concert until April 26. Therefore, it had to be a last-minute poll and could not have been any earlier.
Second, yes voting was only a fraction of the total enrollment, however everyone was given a chance. Just like the national election or any kind of democratic voting. The chance is there, so take advantage of it.
Third, if you consider the top vote getter to Ludacris then there are only eight votes in between. All the artists above Ludacris that got the votes were unavailable.
Most schools do not even consider student input in their events. The SGA is working on legislation to provide for a rotating genre for this major event every semester.
If we strictly left it up to student votes on what concert to bring, then each semester will be country music. When do we play to the other genres that the minority of the students want?
The average student does not know what goes into production of a concert. You cannot just choose an artist and decide for that artist to come.
There’s so much more.
SGA welcomes the concern of the students, however, I think facts need to be straightened about before arguments are made. Thanks!
JR Husmillo
SGA President
