The ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band will be featured in a Bluegrass and Gospel Concert on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Johnson City Masonic Temple, 304 W. Watauga Ave.
This concert is sponsored by the Nolichuckey Grandview Chapter #194, Order of the Eastern Star and proceeds from the concert will benefit various charitable organizations supported by the chapter.
The Bluegrass Pride Band is one of the premier bands in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Program, part of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services.
Members include J.P. Mathes, Elizabethton, on banjo; Aaron Jackson, Quitman, Texas, on mandolin; Daniel Boner, Bridgeton, N.J., on guitar; Adam Starr, Cairo, Ga., on dobro; Jessica Ball, Rogersville, and Todd Meade, Nickelsville, Va., on fiddle; and David Babb, Springfield, on bass.
They will be joined by numerous other performers.
Rev. Harold McNabb, pastor of Greenwood Baptist Church, Johnson City, will perform several old-time gospel songs.
John and Angela “Sam” Fleenor, a husband-and-wife duo from East Tennessee, are both “accomplished vocalists whose harmonies blend well in the mountain musical tradition. Their music reflects the spiritual values, family traditions and culture of the Appalachian people with a pleasing, family-oriented stage presence.” John, who plays guitar, will be accompanied by Angela on the upright bass.
Jim Hunter’s Rockingham Road Bluegrass Band is described as “four guys on the front and back sides of 60 years young – two guys in their mid-40s and one guy at 22 – giving you culture shock.”
They will perform traditional and progressive bluegrass, as well as other styles of music. Admission is $10.
