Remember the ’80s? Yeah, neither do I, but I remember Back to the Future, Sixteen Candles, Better Off Dead, The Goonies and a plethora of other scarring – er, wonderful memory-building movies from the ’80s.
I realize that most of you reading this are, like I, too young to really remember the 1980s, but I bet most of your cherished childhood memories are of things saturated in the culture of the time. Ludicrous and indulgent clothing, the strange health fanaticism, and of course, cocaine have all been indoctrinated into the youth of our generation through osmosis fueled mostly by the media of our collective childhood.
That’s why you all have the burning unconscious desire to don a bright neon shirt and white sport coat, roll up the sleeves on that baby, and cut footloose.
It was with this in mind that the Student Painting and Drawing Association put together the upcoming Awesome ’80s Prom. The prom will be held in the University High School Gym, ETSU campus this Thursday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m.
Tickets, $6 per person or $10 per couple, will be available at the door or through many of the SPDA’s members that are floating around campus (you can easily identify them by the paint on their clothes).
The price of admission includes all the sweet ’80s tunes you can handle, provided by both a DJ and Johnson City’s own, The Here, punch, finger foods, and, of course, the opportunity to become the Prom King and Queen.
Dress code will include anything ’80s or Halloween costumes. There will be an opportunity to have professional photos taken of you in your fabulous garb for $2 per photo.
The theme chosen for the prom is Enchantment Under the Sea a la Back to the Future and the University High Gym will be decked out accordingly with undersea creatures, mermaids, bubbles and maybe even some pirate booty if you are lucky.
The SPDA is aware that Ludacris is slated to perform the same night in the Mini-Dome and welcomes any in attendees of the concert to come as you are afterwards and experience the ambiance of the 1980’s relived. This event is a fundraiser for the Student Painting and Drawing Association’s visiting artist fund which recently brought us the DC flyer artist and punk musician Ryan Nelson’s lecture and all profits will be directly applied to future culturally enriching events of the like.
