The much-debated Ludacris concert wasn’t the only event for students to attend on Thursday night. The Well and the art department also provided entertainment, in the form of a Christian concert and an ’80s prom, respectively.
“I kind of morally object to Ludacris’ lyrics and I knew this would be safer,” said Chelsey Tschida, a freshman who attended the Fuse concert sponsored by The Well.
“The amphitheatre is a good place to come, good for worship,” she said.
Brad Holt, a freshman in pre-med, agreed. “I feel like Ludacris is degrading to women,” he said. “I didn’t want to listen to a guy who would support that.
“I was kind of thinking everybody would be at the concert, but it looks like there’s going to be a decent crowd here,” he said.
For Donnie Johnson, a sophomore in English, attending the Ludacris concert was not an option.
“I came to the Fuse concert because to go support Ludacris would be compromising by faith and make me a hypocrit,” Johnson said.
Not everyone who went to hear Ludacris were supporting his lyrics, either.
Brandon Ogle, a non-student who attended the concert, wanted “a really good laugh.”
“I think it will be completely and utterly entertaining,” he said.
For students who weren’t satisfied with the concerts, the art department was holding an ’80s prom in the University High School gym. The dance, themed “Enchantment Under the Sea,” attracted big hair and bright clothes from many students.
Erin Kestner and Justin Simpson, juniors in digital media, dressed up as Kelly and Zack, characters from Saved By the Bell, a popular show from the late ’80s and early ’90s.
“The ’80s prom only comes once,” Kestner said. “I found out about this a long time ago and scheduled everything around it.”
The prom was complete with undersea decorations and the crowning of the prom king and queen.
Jerome Arnold, a junior art major, admits he still listens to music from the ’80s. “I like the ’80s. You can move around and be yourself.”
The concerts and prom were part of the celebration of this year’s Homecoming.
