October was a decent month for DVDs. Nothing outrageous or daft about any DVD, such as a 40th Anniversary Director’s Special Collectors Deluxe Edition. It was quite for those who wanted movies, but that was October.
November, however, is full of DVDs that prove one thing; the holiday season is upon us. With that in mind, in the next month viewers will see a slew of box sets, special editions to movies that are already out and other whose its and whatnots.
Nov. 1st Today belongs to one man: George Lucas. Today also marks the first time ever Star Wars fans will own all six movies on DVD, with the release of Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. The final installment of the new Star Wars trilogy and the final Star Wars movie in general (So Lucas says), has been 2005’s No. 1 movie, so far. Revenge of the Sith is the movie most Star Wars fans have been waiting for, and it’s didn’t disappoint. The DVD will not disappoint as well with features that include: commentary from Lucas, producer Rick McCallum and more; deleted scenes; a documentary about the epic final battle scene between Anakin and Obi-Wan; “A Hero Falls” music video and so much more.
Also released today: Office Space Special Edition; a special edition of the 1953 version of War of the Worlds; A Brat Pack Collection which include already released versions of The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Weird Science;
Nov. 8. I’m going to go ahead and call today a mini-Johnny Depp day. Released today on DVD are two Johnny Depp movies; one is a classic and the other is a remake of a classic. The first DVD is a Collector’s Tin Edition of Edward Scissorhands; the second is Tim Burton’s remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Edward comes as a Collector’s Anniversary Edition (as to which anniversary I don’t know – it’s the holidays so it can be any anniversary) which has commentary from Burton, interviews from various cast members including Depp, Burton and Winona Ryder. The tin has six original photos from the movie set.
Charlie comes in two versions: a two-disc Deluxe Edition and just the DVD. The Deluxe has nothing eye-popping, no deleted scenes, no commentary; just a couple of features. Must mean another edition will come out in the future.
Also released today: Unrated Edition of The Devil’s Rejects; Special Editions of Jumanji and Big Fish; Season 1 of Beavis and Butthead; and for the kid in you Volume 1 of Ducktales.
Nov. 15. I don’t know how to write the DVD releases today. There is Madagascar, a movie in which I only found the penguins to be funny; Stealth, a bad follow up for Jamie Foxx after Ray; and finally Skeleton Key which is a movie I can’t judge because I haven’t seen. So I’ll say this, this day belongs to TV shows. The 10th and final season of Friends, second season of Scrubs, a box set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which include seasons 1-7), Fantasy Island Season 1 and The Flintstones Season 4 dominate today.
Nov. 22. Thanksgiving will belong to the No. 2 movie of 2005, Spielberg’s remake of War of the Worlds. The two versions (no surprise) of this movie come out. One is just the movie while the other is a two-disc deluxe edition, which has a look at HG Wells’s legacy and production notes. Nothing special about this deluxe edition.
Also out this day: The Polar Express, the remake of the TV classic The Honeymooners, a special edition of (the already released) Aliens vs. Predator; Seinfeld Seasons 5 and 6; and finally the 1933 and 1976 versions of King Kong.
Nov. 29. The first Tuesday in the holiday season involves a slew of special editions, box sets and TV Shows. With no focus on one DVD, here is what comes out the 29th: Mummy Collectors Set (includes The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King); Jurassic Park Adventure Pack (Jurassic Parks 1-3); Tremors Attack Pack (Tremors 1-4); special editions of Legend of the Fall, A River Runs Through It and Frighteners; March of the Penguins; Mr. and Mrs. Smith; Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo; Season 3 of Family Guy and Season 5 of CSI.
