Heather’s Hideaway, a local venue in downtown Johnson City, is known for their rock, punk rock and hardcore shows. Recently they have expanded their musical horizon by bringing in hip-hop artists. Some of the artists they have had are: Pigeon John, Cappadonna from the WuTang Clan, Qwel and Stick Figures, Astronatalis and
Awol One.
Now there is a place downtown that features and brings in hip hop artists. Caleb Geis, who organizes and books shows for The Hideaway, said that was a need that needed to be met. He also told me they have been doing about two or three hip hop shows a month since April. The shows have been small and bring in mostly
The Hideaway’s regulars, The Cappadonna show brought in the most people and was their biggest hip-hop show so far. Geis would love to bring in artist like Jackie Jasper, Motion Man, Mf Doom, Buck, Old Dominion, Bree Evaflowin, Sixtoo, Doseone, the Micronauts and so many others.
Geis grew up in a in a city outside of Ann Arbor, Mich., called Ypsilanti and has an older brother, Sean, who was his idol and was into hip hop. Around 1982 Caleb got into painting, trading tapes and break dancing.
That’s when his passion for hip hop began. “We had a lot of good radio stations up there and I used to stay up and tape them,” he said.
Then he moved to Tennessee in 1987, which was a culture shock, because no one listened to hip hop or skated in Jonesborough. Now Geis has an opportunity to share his love for hip hop and other music at The Hideaway.
A few acts that are scheduled to come this month and next month are: Hanger 18, cryptic one, agent strange mouth and Eibol and gyro. For more details on up coming shows go to www.ahideaway.com.
