Campus Recreation concluded its flag football league on Thursday night with the championship games for all divisions.
Championship Night was originally scheduled for Wednesday but rain pushed the event back to Thursday.
“It was just too wet,” said Adam Knobloch, graduate assistant for intramurals said. “It was colder Thursday, but the rain would have made Wednesday miserable.”
The championship games began at 4 p.m. with the Men’s C tournament. Broke Phi Broke defeated Second String 29-6.
“The C tournament is something new we tried this year,” Knobloch said. “Traditionally we have only had two mens’ tournaments, one for Competitive and one for Rec.
“By breaking up the Rec. into B and C divisions, we tried to create more competitive games for everyone.”
The game of the night was the Men’s A championship between Dem Boys and DuckSquad, in what was a rematch of last year’s quarter-final game.
Dem Boys won the Competitive championship in 2003 while DuckSquad took home the crown in 2004.
The two teams played to a one-overtime tie in a regular season exhibition game which was scheduled as a playoff seeding tie-breaker for the two undefeated teams.
Dem Boys capitalized on DuckSquad turnovers, intercepting the ball three times, with Ryan Moore pulling in two of those.
Dem Boys’ quarterback Ross Garland seemed to be able to move the ball at will against the DuckSquad defense. The DuckSquad defense did step up on point after attempts in a damage-control effort, intercepting two of Dem Boys’ four conversion attempts, and holding on a third.
“We just didn’t play our game tonight,” said Gary Carver, captain of the DuckSquad. “Turnovers really hurt us and we didn’t come up with the big play.”
DuckSquad never got their offense in full gear and scored a season-low 12 points. Dem Boys counted down the final seconds of the game clock to regain the Comp championship, 25-12.
The loss was especially hard for DuckSquad senior Jason Lawson.
“That’s it for me. Its time to hang the cleats up for good now,” Lawson said.
In other games, the Co-Ed and Men’s B championships saw repeat performances as Sig Ep Co-Ed and Hoagland’s Heroes won their games, 29-0 and 13-6, respectively, to retain their championship status.
The reschedule had an adverse affect on Kappa Delta when they had to forfeit the women’s game to Lady DuckSquad.
