The first 1,700 Buccaneer fans that enter Saturday’s men’s basketball game against Stetson will get a free Tim Smith bobblehead doll. The game starts at 4 p.m., so be sure to get there early.
Why a Tim Smith bobblehead? The senior guard is on the brink of breaking the all-time scoring record at ETSU.
ETSU’s marketing and event manager Kevin Bostian thought a figure of the talented point guard would be a great promotional idea. Bostian said that Tim Smith jerseys sell so well during special promotions that the figurine should attract a crowd.
In regards to the money to have the doll made “The Pirate Club and ticket office stepped up and got it done,”Bostian said.
You might be thinking, if Tim Smith can get a bobblehead, why can’t I have one that looks like me? It’s actually quite easy.
Anybody can get a figurine made in their own likeness, but it would cost $400 for the first mold alone because of the difficult process required to accurately recreate individual human features on a plastic doll.
ETSU used a company out of Seattle, Wash. to produce the doll.
“They took pictures of Timmy from all sides, and also pictures of him dribbling the ball from all sides in order to make the bobblehead,” Bostian said.
The bobblehead has a trademark through East Tennessee State University, so don’t try to sell your Tim Smith bobblehead to somebody.
Since Tim Smith’s figurine was painted in China does that make him a globetrotter?
