The last two weekends in Johnson City have been plagued with frigid temperatures and snow.
But the staff at Campus Recreation hopes that will change this weekend when their 2nd Annual Super Weekend Invitational Flag-Football Tournament “kicks” off.
Last year’s inaugural tournament was held over Super Bowl weekend, hence the tournament’s name.
However, this year, tournament director Adam Knobloch decided to push back the tourney a couple of weeks to accommodate more teams.
“We had 10 teams participate last year,” Knobloch said. “With an extra couple of weeks for planning, we were able to get 16 teams this year. That was the number I was shooting for.”
Knobloch didn’t want teams that were not invited to participate to feel snubbed.
“We do have a limit as to what we can reasonably accommodate,” he said. “I had to set some type of criteria that the teams had to meet. We sent out invitations to all the competitive teams, as well as the recreational teams that advanced in the tournament last fall.”
Overall, Knobloch had to extend 24 invitations to arrive at the final pool of 16 teams.
The DuckSquad won last year’s tournament, defeating Sig Ep 49-47 in the championship game. It took the teams three overtimes before a winner was decided.
However, DuckSquad will not be hunted in this tournament. That label will fall on the Dem Boys team.
Dem Boys tallied a perfect 8-0 record last fall, defeating the DuckSquad in the championship game.
Dem Boys have won two intramural championships in the last three seasons and will be looking for their first Super Weekend title.
The chance at winning another championship has Dem Boys captain Alex Nunez excited.
“This is just another opportunity to prove that Dem Boys has been the best flag-football team at ETSU over the last few years,” Nunez said.
The Super Weekend will start Friday at 3 p.m. and the tournament’s championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday.
