The baseball team was coming off a two-game losing streak into the Atlantic Sun home opener. The streak was extended to three as Campbell won 10-6 over the Bucs.
The Bucs were first to get on board in the second inning as they started to put hits together. Ryan Self, second base, hit a single to start out.
Troy Mendez followed with another single. Tanner Moore followed up with a RBI double to make it 1-0.
The third inning had more offense. Justin Tramble, short stop, led off with a double. Anthony Russel doubled and hit Tramble in to make it 2-0.
Then catcher Danny Petro was walked, designated hitter Justin Aughey doubled, and Self was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But nothing came of that as Mendez flew out to end the inning.
In the fifth inning, the pitcher for Campbell lost his grip on the ball and started throwing wildly. Petro recorded his first career triple and scored when the pitcher threw a very wild and high pitch to Aughey to make the score 3-0.
In the seventh inning, ETSU’s pitching started to fall apart and Campbell led 6-3 by the end of it.
In the eighth inning, Campbell packed on three more runs and took a 9-3 lead into the ninth where Robb Meng hit a sky-high home run.
The ninth inning was a great comeback for the Bucs, as it started out with Moore and Tramble getting walked.
C.J. Lee followed with a single off the first base bag. Russel was hit by a pitch which brought in Moore to make it 10-4. Petro hit a single to bring in Lee and Russel and make it 10-6. The rally was snuffed out with three straight outs.
“We missed a lot of opportunities,” said Coach Tony Skole. “I give credit to Campbell, they had good hits late and we couldn’t make up seven runs in one inning. I’m proud of the guys for fighting back and not quitting.”
“We were making good pitches, they were right there, but they just brought the bats tonight,” Petro said. “We know we can beat them, and we fought back in the ninth. We just need to get back to winning tomorrow.”
Tramble said that they should have won. “They just showed us their bats tonight. We came back in the ninth and I thought we had it then. We all thought we had it.
“It was a good rally. We just need to get back to basics and play our game,” he said. “We need to show these guys why we are the one spot in the conference right now.
