Dear Editor,
Football is like porn, in that there’s a lot of action and I can’t seem to look away, but after it’s over I wonder; why the hell did I waste the two hours. Football at ETSU has proven itself an inefficient program.
With a yearly cost of $1 million dollars, it was almost as successful as Crystal Pepsi, almost.
Since the team’s inception in 1920, there has been a grand total of eight seasons with seven or more wins and an astounding total of 33 winning seasons, a win percentage of about 40 percent.
Now, after almost four years, the powers that be seem to think that this historically sub-mediocre franchise has somehow turned into a beneficial and profitable venture. I could only wish that my professors would begin to follow the Stanton and company school of thought, where 40 percent is a praiseworthy and passing grade.
As hopefully most of you know, there will be a referendum April 10-11 to poll students on whether or not we support a tuition hike to fund the football program.
Although the first vote on this matter did receive a 62 percent approval, what is not readily known is that only 3,700 students voted. When one considers that we have about 13,000 students at ETSU, that percentage drops to about 19 percent, a number that falls a few miles short of a convincing majority.
Tuition at ETSU has increased by 77 percent over the last seven years, and if we keep consenting to the hikes, is it any wonder that tuition continues to rise?
A line in the sand needs to be drawn before we find that we have followed the piper too far and the water is above our heads. What better place than here, what better time than now?
