Amnesty gives thanksDear Editor,
A group of students from ETSU’s chapter of Amnesty International recently drove to Milwaukee to attend the Annual General Meeting, a yearly gathering where Human Rights activists from around the world meet to learn and make connections so that they can be more skilled advocates. Despite reducing all our costs to a shoestring budget, there were still some significant expenses which would have been difficult for our members to cover.
However, thanks to a number of individuals at ETSU we were able to raise the needed funds. I would like to thank Neal Mehta of the SGA who proposed applying for BUC funds and all the SGA senators and staff who were very helpful and worked hard to distribute BUC funding.
Rebecca Pyles and Donna Williams of the Honors College were also very generous with their time and helped us wade through the administrative red tape. Theresa Marlow of Student Services, who processes all of the subsidies granted by BUC funds, was exceptional.
And finally I would like to thank Joe Rice, whose years of serving as Amnesty’s faculty adviser have made him an invaluable resource for our student organization.
Because of these individuals, and many more behind the scenes which I did not meet, our organization had the funding to expose new members to an international community of human rights activists.
Such experiences foster budding ambitions to make a difference in the world. Thank you
– Matthew Schacht, Amnesty at ETSU President
