Dear Editor,
Now that the voting is over, and it is clear that the student body of ETSU will not be bullied nor coerced into a “future” of small-minded, provincial apathy, the time has come to think about homecoming as it relates to the goals of the university.
Since there is no longer a football team, and there is not going to be one, I assert that homecoming should be retired as well.
As a student, November is always a very busy month academically, and I view the past several homecoming events as distracting and annoying. ETSU should re-appropriate the money, energy and resources of our so-called homecoming toward something that will benefit the university and students.
We have many wonderful programs here at ETSU that need support and funding. This is a public university; it does not belong to the administration!
I am so proud of our student body for voting no to football. It was the right decision, and despite the propaganda and rhetoric, our students were not fooled. I am angry and disappointed with the manner in which this issue was dealt with, but I see it as backfiring on those who abused their power. At least this time: Truth prevails!
