Former Saturday Night Live comedian David Spade, accompanied by comedian Todd Glass, made an appearance in the Mini-Dome last Thursday. Jeff Foxworthy was initially slated to perform, but canceled after learning that his television program “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” was renewed for another season.
Students weren’t disappointed by the last minute change. “I’m a pretty big Todd Glass fan,” said senior T.J. Bradley. “I bought my ticket pretty fast when I heard he was coming.” Glass has been featured on Comedy Central and the “Jimmy Kimmel Show.”
Glass opened the show with a few jokes directed towards the interpreter for the deaf saying, “Oh my gosh, this has to be the hottest comedian I have ever seen.”
Kelly Jefferson said that she “wished Todd went a little longer but it was great, definitely.”
Spade followed Glass, teasing his lesser known opening act. “You’ve seen him, not on TV, but you know, maybe Wal-Mart.”
Spade opened up saying that he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon when he was in college, “receiving about nine credit hours,” adding that he planned to take summer classes to finish his degree.
“He is an SA (Sigma Alpha Epsilon), and I am an SA – I am supporting my fraternity by being here tonight. That is why we got here early, so that we could get good seating together,” freshman Joe Story said. Almost three rows at the event where taken up by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
“I was rather disappointed due to the fact that he preformed his old stand up and didn’t perform much new material,” Mariel Blair said. Spade has a DVD called “David Spade: Take the Hit,” recorded in 1998. Much of his performance Thursday can be found on the DVD. Clips with similar material can also be found on YouTube.com.
Most people know Spade from SNL or as Joe Dirt. “I’ve never been to Tennessee . but Joe Dirt has,” Spade said, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd.
Junior Ryan Naegele who has attended nearly all the major events since Everclear, said, “I was a fan of him (Spade) since he was on SNL back in the day.”
“I was glad he (Spade) came,” Aimee White said. “We were glad he came instead of Foxworthy.”
“He was a lot funnier than I expected,” White said.
Spade was invited to ETSU as part of the school’s annual spring concert entertainment event. Each year, students select from a group of different entertainers and the school tries to book the highest vote recipient. “We paid for it. We might as well take advantage of it,” junior Nathan Silver said.
There where over 2,040 tickets sold for the event. Northeast State and Walters State students were also allowed to attend this event for $10.
