Earth Day was celebrated at ETSU last Thursday in Borchuck Plaza. Several community organizations set up booths in support of a cleaner environment. The event is sponsored by ETSU’s environmental studies minor and the student group Initiative for Clean Energy (ICE). Earth Day is now the largest secular holiday celebrated in the entire world.
There were several booths set up in front of the library giving reasons to care about the environment, ways for students to get involved and ways they conserve energy. ETSU students participated as well as students from the University High School.
“Learning different ways to recycle is something I can go home and tell my parents,” said one university school student. Many teachers brought their students to the event so that they could become more environmentally aware.
On Monday, the College Democrats held a showing of “An Inconvenient Truth,” a movie created by Al Gore that focuses on the dangers of global warming, in support of Earth Day. Some teachers were giving extra credit to students for attending the showing.
“It was pretty sweet getting extra credit for a great movie,” said sophomore Jamie Hodge.
