Dear Editor,
I doubt when feminist Sarah Grimke published “Letters on the Equality of Sexes” in the 1830s, calling for equal rights for women, she was fighting for the right to literally be viewed as a male.
I recently read an article reported by CNN that a female, high school, “transgender” student in Fresno, California is running for prom king.
Because of her nomination by her classmates, local administrators have agreed to reverse a district protocol that limited males to compete for the title of prom king.
I want to make it clear that I am not judging anyone’s lifestyle choice, but I feel that this matter has been taken too far.
I feel there is something wrong with our school systems when rules are reversed, blurring the simple fact that a prom king candidate could be anything else but a male.
The student’s only quoted argument in the article is, “I would never run for anything if I had to wear a dress,” Cinthia Covarrubias said.
I’m not positive, but is there any rule stating that a prom queen candidate has to wear a dress? If that’s all she is going to argue, then why doesn’t she fight for the right to wear a tux as a prom queen candidate and stop fueling our already confused society to buy into an idea.
As one student at the high school stated “. we live in a generation now where dudes are chicks and chicks are dudes,” said 16-year old-Leanne Reyes.
