This week marks the kickoff of a series of events preparing for John Green’s visit to campus on Feb. 26 as part of the Festival of Ideas. Green’s book of essays, “The Anthropocene Reviewed” is this year’s common read.

To prepare for Green’s talk, the Graduate and Professional Student Association is hosting Trivia Talks: 30-minute sessions of trivia and conversation, each of which focuses on one of Green’s essays. Tricia Korade, student representative for the Common Read Committee, said the trivia “leads into dialogue,” giving participants a chance to discuss the book and read it if they haven’t had the chance.

“It’s meant to be fun above all else,” Korade said. “It’s about getting together and having conversations.”

There are five trivia talks scheduled throughout the week and plenty of chances to participate. Korade is especially excited about Thursday’s talk, focusing on Green’s essay “The World’s Largest Ball of Paint.” It’s easy for interested individuals to participate, even if they’ve only read the essay for that particular talk. Korade promises “swag bags” and encourages people to come and have fun, while learning more about the common read.

“Regarding Green’s essays,” Korade said. “It’s inspiring to see someone willing to be so vulnerable.”

The trivia talks are meant to foster discussion and encourage participants to express their views, modeling the vulnerability Green shows in his writing. Combining fun trivia and important dialogue, the Trivia Talks are a great opportunity to prepare for the Festival of Ideas.

In preparation for the Festival, ETSU students are invited to participate in “Reviewing the World We’ve Made.” This writing project is inspired by “The Anthropocene Reviewed” and gives students more opportunities to engage with the world around them and with Green’s work.
