East Tennessee State will play Wofford at 2:30 p.m. today in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference tournament at the North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, S.C.
The Terriers defeated the Spartans 77-73 Wednesday to advance to the next round.
The Bucs will play without their leading scorer, Tiras Wade. Wade was averaging 16.3 points a game before he took an indefinite leave of absence.
Zakee Wadood averages 14.5 points a contest, while Tim Smith follows with 14.4.
Shannon Huffstetler has the best shooting percentage for the Bucs at 69 pecent (11-16). Jerald Fields has hit 121 of 219 shots for 55 percent from the field and Wadood shoots 51 percent (130-253).
Ryan Lawson is the Bucs long-range hitter. Lawson has made 37-of-108 3-pointers to average 1.4 a game.
Wadood and Fields pull down an average 7.6 and 6.6 rebounds a game, respectively.
Wadood also leads the Bucs in steals and blocks. He averages 3.2 steals and 2.2 blocks a game.
The Bucs average 82.6 points a game, while giving up 75.4 points a game. On average, ETSU outrebounds its opponents 38.4 to 35.6 for +2.9 margin.
Wofford usually outscores its opponents by 2.5 points. The Terrier average 76.2 points a game and allow 73.7.
The Terriers are usually outrebounded by 2.5 margin, pulling down 34.4 a game and letting their opponents grab 36.9.
Mike Lenzly is the big player for Wofford. Lenzly averages 15.9 points and 5.2 rebounds a game. Lenzly made 67-of-158 three-point shots fo 2.5 a game.
Tyler Berg has hit 104-of-184 shots to average 57 percent from the field this season.
Today’s quarterfinal round will see the top four teams in the final standings playing for the first time. No. 1 South seed College of Charleston will play at noon against Georgia Southern.
Tonights session starts at 6 p.m. with Davidson, the top seed in the North, facing the Furman-VMI winner, and number two South seed, Chattanooga, playing the Appalachian State-Citadel winner at approximately 8:30.
The regular season ended on Saturday and for the second year in a row, the North Division ended in a three-way tie for first. Appalachian, Davidson and ETSU all finished with identical 11-5 records. In sorting out the tiebreaker, Davidson claimed the top seed by virtue of its regular season sweep of the Mountaineers. ETSU edged out ASU for the second seed because the Bucs posted a 1-1 record vs. Davidson during the season while ASU was 0-2.
The South Division finished with a three-way tie for third between Wofford, Furman and Georgia Southern whom all finished at 8-8. Wofford earned the third seed by virtue of its season sweep of Chattanooga. The Georgia Southern-Furman tie could not be broken by comparing season results and was settled by a coin flip. Furman won the toss and earned the fourth seed while Georgia Southern finished as the fifth seed.
Friday’s men’s semifinals begin at 6 p.m. with Saturday’s championship game slated for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
