ETSU’s Office of Career Placement and Internship Services uses new technologies to provide direction for alumni who are struggling with finding a job in the competitive job market. Students can also use the services to get a head start on finding a job after college.
“In the last year many alumni has been caught in a lay-off and don’t have anywhere to go, so we do our best to try and put them in contact with jobs and help them with resumes as well,” said Dan Emmel, director of the Office of Career Placement and Internship Services.
Two-thirds of ETSU students take advantage of the resources the Office of Career Placement and Internship Services provides. The web site gets approximately 350 hits per week.
“The student demographics are changing. Approximately 80 percent of the students here commute and 43 percent are non-traditional. This technology can fit their schedules,” Emmel said.
The Career Center’s web site offers help for students.
Included on the site is a step-by-step resume builder, which gives instructions and tips for every aspect of a resume and also helps with a cover letter.
“Generic resumes are on their way out, and this web site helps students to stay current and build a resume especially for the type of careers they may be interested in,” Emmel said.
E-Portfolio is a very current way to send a resume. This web site offers an option to compile an e-Portfolio. These portfolios include recorded audio — which can be useful for bilingual students — links to submit samples of your work, etc.
“This can save students from having to pay $5 in postage every time they send a resume,” Emmel said.
Job searches are included in the web site. Major name job searches, such as monster.com are included, but there are smaller ones as well. The searches conform to the user, such as where he/she may want to live.
Students who need interviewing skills can also benefit from the Office of Career Placement and Internship Services. The office conducts mock interviews for any students who want the extra practice.
The office also helps students find internships. The office sets up the internship, the employer makes a job description, and then the chairman of the department the internship relates to has to approve the job. Next, the internship is advertised to students.
