Since Thanksgiving is on our heels, I would like to appropriately give thanks.
But, this Thanksgiving I have to give props to a man who has gained a little more press this year, not for his accomplishments, but for what has been taken from him. That man is ETSU football head coach Paul Hamilton. At least, he still is the coach while this story is being typed, which is the night before this gentleman loses his team.
Paul Hamilton is a Christian. He is virtuous, a born leader, motivator and generally caring person. Hamilton has not downed any administrator at ETSU (although he has plenty of reason to do so). And when I asked him this week if Title IX was a part of the problem with men’s college sports now, especially his predicament at present time, he commented on those being able to take part in sports because of it. Although I happen to disagree with him, he spoke not a harsh word about any Title IX shortfallings.
Hamilton and his wife, Jane, have proven to be a Christian family that exemplifies Christian maturity. While Christian maturity is not subject usually studied at ETSU, I believe I can speak for all those who have known Hamilton or met him once. It’s immediately obvious this man is a mature Christian. The same can be said for his wife.
The Hamilton family has taught me more this year than any philosopher, theologian or literary figure I have studied. Coach Hamilton dealt with a short hand given to him and he made it into a successful situation.
He did not turn existentialist, atheist, moral realist, secular humanist or socialist because of his plight.
Hamilton never said God did me wrong so there is nothing to live for. (Existentialism)
Because of the wrong that has been handed down to me, it must be God’s idea put into the minds of those in power to end my football program, therefore he does not exist. (Atheism.)
Since they took away my team, they should take away some sports money from the other big schools, such as the University of Tennessee, and redistribute it to us so I can have my team back. (Socialism).
Hamilton said none of these things. That’s why I am thankful for being able to cover the Bucs’ last season because I was able to see Paul Hamilton work through real adversity like a man.
“Paul has been a strong Christian since we first met as seniors at Appalachian State,” Jane Hamilton said.
“He has helped me grow this year because of the way he has handled this last season at ETSU. We love everyone here at ETSU and pray the best for all of them.”
I will end this with a statement Hamilton made often.
“If I can ever help any of you, let me know.
