The Lady Bucs had two reasons to celebrate this weekend in Kentucky.
The first reason would be the first win of the 2004 season and the second would be the match-high 53 assists that transfer Brittany Kessel posted against the University of Evansville.
The Lady Bucs traveled to Richmond, Ky., this past weekend to participate in the Nike/Comfort Suites Invitational.
ETSU faced some tough competition while battling Eastern Kentucky, the University of Evansville and Lipscomb.
The Lady Bucs (1-6) were able to capture their first win in their last game against Lipscomb (1-5), 30-22, 30-24, 31-29.
The team was led by freshman Callie Kiselich with 12 kills, while Brittany Kessel had 33 assists. Lone senior Karen Freeburg led the defense with 15 digs.
The team was able to come together to average a .283 hitting percentage to Lipscomb’s .072.
The first two matches of the invitational did not fare as well as ETSU’s third match.
In the first match against Eastern Kentucky the Bucs were defeated, 19-30, 30-27, 24-30, 18-30.
In the first game the Colonels were able to record a .303 hitting percentage, while ETSU averaged .000.
The Lady Bucs were able to battle back in the second game, hitting .292. Sophomore Jennifer Sartor led the Bucs in the game win with 7 kills. Kessel had another great match with 38 assists for the Bucs, while Freeburg led defense again with 11 digs against the Colonels.
The second match against the University of Evansville proved more of a challenge on both sides of the ball.
The match went into five games with the Purple Aces winning 3-2 (32-30, 19-30, 27-30, 32-30, 10-15). In this first game Kessel was able to rack up the match-high 53 assists.
Kiselich was another big factor in the game posting 14 kills, followed by sophomore Jennifer Sartor with 13 kills.
