The Bucs earned their first Southern Conference win of the season with a 2-0 shutout over visiting UT-Chattanooga on Sunday.
By looking at the one-sided 23 to four shot count one might think that the Mocs won by a great margin, but that was not the case on this day, as goalie Sarah Prendergast and the rest of the ETSU defense denied everything put it front of them.
“Defensively we were all over the field, we stepped it front of almost every shot and that made the keeper’s job a lot easier,” said head coach Heather Henson.
Prendergast had an unbelievable showing between the posts making nine saves and frustrating the Chattanooga players all game. She earned her first shutout victory of the season and she now has a record of 1-1-1.
“Sarah came out strong today, when she does that everyone is going to drop in behind her,” said Henson.
The Bucs (4-4-3; 1-1-3 SoCon) might have only taken four shots all game, but they knew where to put them as they made half of their attempts. The scoring began in the 39th minute of play when junior Catherine Olsen tight roped the sideline, out ran her defender to the middle of the field, and then dropped off a perfect pass to Emily Fulcher, who fired the ball into the back of the net. Olsen, who is back from an early season knee injury, talked about her assist.
“I took it (side)line, I think I just spun off of my defender, and then I toed it to Emily,” said Olsen, “I couldn’t see her, but I heard her so I passed it .”
ETSU would go into halftime with a 1-0 lead on the Mocs (8-3-0, 4-2-0), but Jennifer Fields knew that the Bucs would need more to hold on for the win.
“We knew that one goal wasn’t going to win it, and we needed to put another one in,” said Fields.
Fields got her first goal of the season in the 46th minute after she headed Blair DeGraw’s free kick in the net.
“Blair and I work good together and she can usually find me in the air,” said Fields.
Field’s senior leadership showed on the offensive end.
“Being a senior I just wanted to win and we really needed this conference win,” said Fields.
