The dedication of East Tennessee State University’s new George L. Carter and Honorary Alumni award recognition walls will take place during Homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. in the lower level lobby of the D.P. Culp University Center.
This permanent display will serve as “a lasting acknowledgement and recognition” of people who have brought honor and distinction to ETSU “by setting forth their likenesses in durable, non-fading images.”
The George L. Carter Award, named for the benefactor who donated the land upon which ETSU’s main campus now stands, is bestowed upon graduates or friends who have made the university a more dynamic and viable force in the world of higher education. This recognition is given only on occasion when an individual has exhibited commitment and loyal support of ETSU fitting Carter’s example.
Honorary Alumni Awards are given to individuals who are not graduates of ETSU but who have demonstrated moral and/or financial support of the university and who have shared their skills, knowledge and personal time and energy with the campus community.
A partnership between General Shale Brick and the ETSU Foundation and Alumni Association helped bring this project to fruition. These recognition walls were privately funded, and no state funds were used.
