The ETSU soccer team fell to 5-7-3 overall and 2-4-3 in the Southern Conference after two tough SoCon games at home.
On Sunday the team played Davidson with great intensity, but could not pull out a win.
“We played with heart,” said ETSU coach Heather Henson. “We played with desire, this is coach Greg Ashton’s first year and he has really pulled the team (Davidson) together.”
The game was scoreless going into halftime and ETSU had two shots off a corner kick right before the break, but the Wildcat defense stood tall.
Both teams battled back and forth, but the 0-0 tie was broken with about 10 minutes remaining in the game on goal by Wildcat Jessica Lahre. Davidson’s Kara Koehrn fired a shot off the left post forcing the ball over to the right side on the goal where Lahre put it in.
“Davidson is ranked No. 1 in the conference and it showed today,” said Henson.
The Bucs played Davidson hard until the final seconds of Sunday’s game, but fatigue was surely a factor towards the end of the contest.
“We get tired, and we lose focus and that lack of focus for a split second cost us a goal,” said Henson.
In an offensive perspective the team made some improvements for previous games but the shot count dropped from the first to second half.
“On the attacking end we created more, our shot count from this game to some of our past games was higher,”said Henson.
“But in the second half we weren’t taking as many shots.” Although ETSU lost the game 1-0, Henson liked the way her team competed against the Wildcats.
“Overall, I am proud of the effort our team played with today,” said Henson.
Jennifer Fields went down midway through the second half with an ankle injury, but the Fields did not let an injury keep her out of game long, as she was back to play the final minutes of the game.
“Jen had to leave the game with an ankle injury, but she iced it, taped it, and got back in there, she wants to play every minute that she can,” said Henson of her senior leader.
