Dear Editor,
After reading Zev Chafets column on abortion, I thought it was necessary to remind the campus why abortion is legal.
Abortion is legal to protect the mother. Child birth is extremely difficult on a woman’s body.
Last year 529,000 women died during childbirth. For women, a pregnancy can literally be a life or death event.
Once a child is born the child needs a great deal of care.
If that mother is not able to meet the high demands of parenthood then that baby is going to meet a very unhappy childhood and perhaps life.
Abortions are often for women who simply do not have the capacity to raise a child.
Women who are in college or are underage are more likely to be unable to support a child.
Furthermore, by having a child that women may no longer be able to pursue a career.
A women choice to have a baby is no one else’s business. Quite frankly I don’t think it’s my business, Pat Robertson’s business or the government’s.
I am not really sure when a fetus becomes a baby. It might be at birth, at 6 months, at 3 months or at conception. However, that is more of a philosophical debate then a scientific debate. Considering the cost of childbirth on women I believe that at birth is the best answer.
