Dear Editor,
Why is George W. Bush still president?
President George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004 was not a surprise victory.
One of the biggest reasons why President Bush won his second term is because of the war he started in Iraq and the War Against Terror. After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, President Bush declared war against those who attacked the United States. Americans did not want a new president coming into office in the middle of war.
This situation can be compared closely to the Franklin Roosevelt presidency.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt entered World War II.
Although he was extremely ill, Roosevelt decided to run for a fourth term in 1944 instead of turning an uncompleted war to a new leader. Americans then didn’t want a new president to come into office during the middle of war either. As a result, Franklin Roosevelt was elected to serve four terms as the president of the United States.
Americans then and now agree strongly that a president who starts war needs to finish it. This is one of the main reasons why President George W. Bush won his second term as president.
