Tennessee Reading Association presented East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Edward J. Dwyer with its “Distinguished Professor Award” for the 2003-2004 academic year.
The award, which represents “service to the organization over a substantial period of time,” was given to Dwyer, the 12-year editor of the association’s journal, Tennessee Reading Teacher. He has also served on the organization’s executive board for 12 years. Prior to assuming the editorship, he was a columnist for the publication. In addition, Dwyer has made presentations at the association’s annual conference for the past 25 years. He is a professor in ETSU’s department of curriculum and instruction in the Claudius G. Clemmer College of Education.
The Tennessee Reading Association’s primary mission is the promotion of literacy among the citizens of Tennessee. Affiliated with the International Reading Association, the state organization’s membership of 2,000 educators includes classroom teachers, reading specialists, school administrators, and college faculty.
