The No. 72 ranked East Tennessee State University men’s tennis team defeated Norfolk State, 5-0, in the second day of the annual Virginia Commonwealth University 4-1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The Buccaneers made a clean sweep against Norfolk winning all five of its matches in straight sets and are now 2-1 overall to start the season.
In doubles action, seniors Fernando Fiuri and Federico Ochoa defeated Roman DelCastillo and Stephen Charter 6-2, 6-4.
ETSU collected singles triumphs from Moiss Serrano (6-0, 6-3) at No. 1, Felix Insaurralde (6-1, 6-2) at No. 2, Lisandro Picardo (6-2, 6-4) at No. 3, and Luis Sebastian Serrano (6-1,6-0) at No.4.
Up next for ETSU is a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., where the team will face Wake Forest on Friday at 3 p.m.
Women’s
The Lady Bucs women’s tennis team dropped their second match of the season, 7-0, against the No. 28 ranked team of William & Mary Sunday at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
The Lady Bucs opened their spring season by splitting a win and loss this past weekend.
William & Mary opened the contest by winning all three doubles matches. Sandie Knight and Elena Volobueva fell at No. 2 to the 10th-ranked doubles team in the nation of Amy Wei and Megan Muth, 8-1.
The doubles point was then clinched when Slywia Ziolkowska and Masha Ilina lost 8-5 on court one to W&M’s 22nd-ranked team of Candice Fuchs and Megan Moulton-Levy.
Singles action did not hold much better for ETSU as W&M was just as dominant in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets.
ETSU women’s tennis team fell in their season opener to Richmond, Saturday, by a score of 4-3 in Williamsburg, Va., on the campus of William & Mary.
“Richmond is a good team,” said coach Steve Brooks. “They won the Atlantic 10 and went to the NCAA’s last year.”
The Buccaneers next match is scheduled for Feb. 5 at Liberty University at 6 p.m.
