“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as juror for this notable exhibition,” Beauvais Lyons said in his statement for the Positive/Negative show.
The Positive/Negative exhibit is an annual event at the Slocumb Galleries. Artists from all over the nation sent in slides of their work in hopes to be a part of the 20th anniversary edition that ran Feb. 7-25.
A closing reception was held Feb. 24, which gave attendees the opportunity to hear a lecture from Lyons titled “The Politics of Parody” and view the 29 pieces, including works from Mark Abrahamson, Brian Paulsen and Douglas Navarra.
Lyons is director of the Hokes Archives and a professor of art at the University of Tennessee. His work is displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum and the National Museum of American Art.
“I hope the university celebrates this event by purchasing some of the pieces,” he said. “It would leave a good legacy.”
Students present at the exhibit noted the vast diversity of the show. “It’s interesting to see artists from all over the nation,” said both Brooke Mann and Brooke Fullington. “There’s a really good variety.”
Slocumb Galleries next show will be the Student Undergraduate Honors Exhibition March 1-11. The reception will be held March 4 from 4-6 p.m. Students will be presented with awards featuring money and gift certificates donated by local businesses.
“We really wanted to get the community involved on this one,” said Mindy Herrin, the Slocumb Galleries director. “I’m very pleased with the donations from around the area.”
