The ETSU Arboretum will hold an Arbor Day Celebration with a tree give-away on Friday, March 18, at noon in Borchuck Plaza, in front of the Sherrod Library.
Three species of trees will be available free of charge to members of the ETSU community and the general public: tulip poplar, Virginia pine and willow oak.
Arboretum personnel will provide brochures about the campus trees and lead a walking tour following the tree distribution.
The arboretum will present a public seminar on Tuesday, March 22, with two speakers addressing the importance of trees in protecting the air and water.
Dr. Anthony J. DeLucia, a professor in the Department of Surgery at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, will speak about “Urban Trees: Air Quality Benefits and Beyond.”
DeLucia is past president of the national American Lung Association.
Larry Tankersley, University of Tennessee extension forester, will address “The Role of Trees in the Water Cycle.” He has done extension forestry and wildlife work for 15 years and has experience in soils, nursery production of trees, and landscaping with native trees.
The program will begin at 7 p.m., with refreshments served at 6:30, in the Forum Room of the D. P. Culp University Center at ETSU.
The program is free and open to the public.
