Dear Editor,To say that I was offended by the political cartoon in Feb. 24 issue of the East Tennesseanwould be an understatement.
After having just seen the “cartoon” on Feb. 28, I felt compelled to write a letter voicing my utter disgust over the cartoon.
A political cartoon is supposed to be used as a forum to make social commentary or to make satirical references to current political issues. The cartoon published in the East Tennessean did neither.
I think that the editors of the East Tennessean should have put a little more thought into the impact or implications that such a cartoon would have on their readers.
Whether or not a person is for or against the war in Iraq is irrelevant.
The fact of the matter is that we, as a country, are embroiled in a bitter fight with enemies of this country, and now is the time to support the men and women serving this great nation.
Just remember this, those service members who are putting their lives at risk in Iraq volunteered to do so, so that you wouldn’t have to.
I am glad to see that I am not the only person who felt this way, for Joshua Hammitt voiced many of my sentiments in his letter to the editor in the Feb. 28 issue of the East Tennessean.
Like Mr. Hammitt, I too am a proud veteran that served honorably in the United States Army for eight years.
However, I feel that more than just an apology is needed in this instance.
