With today’s technology, finding a career can be as easy as logging onto a computer. ETSU’s Career Placement and Internship Service offers many online services to give students and alumni advantages in the job marketplace.
For the past several years Calvin Purvis, assistant director of the Career Placement and Internship Services, has been working and developing the e-portfolio.
This is an advanced method of sharing career-related materials through the Internet, Purvis said. And this high-tech service is free to ETSU students and alumni, he said.
“The e-Portfolio is one of the latest tools in professional development, for documenting achievements, career management and for seeking employment,” Purvis said.
The e-portfolio can be found on the career placement home page at www.etsu.edu/careers. On the site are tools and examples to help get started building an impressive e-portfolio.
The amount of time spent putting a portfolio together depends on one’s own knowledge of the Internet and building a web site, Purvis said.
Downloadable directions for getting started and some examples of other student’s e-portfolios are also available on the web site, he said.
Through this digital medium, students and alumni can show off the work achieved over the years or during a college career, Purvis said.
An e-Portfolio, he said, can present information on a person’s background, skills or experience through PowerPoint presentations or video and audio presentations.
Through the creation of e-portfolios students will learn how to plan and develop an electronic web-based version of a rsum.
E-portfolio is also being introduced into the classroom.
Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Dan Brown teaches an online class every semester, Seminar in Mass Communication 4040 “Career Resources.”
In this online class, students assess their own abilities and values and develop portfolios.
“I believe that the e-portfolio is becoming an essential element in the college experience,” Brown said. “In the near future, I expect that employers will expect them, but for now, e-portfolios offer a way for students to stand out among the mass of job seekers.”
