Google has made life easier for many college students.
How many college students waste their nights looking for something on a search engine and sometime never find what they need?
Well never fear, Google is here.
Google has a new Beta test search engine that can help many college students find what they need, before they finish typing. It’s simple and easy to use, but most of all it’s a new way to help people find what they need.
I was in my computer 1100 class, when my teacher showed the class a new search engine.
He had us go to Google and type the word suggest. As a result, a Google link appeared, and when clicked, leads me back to the Google home page.
However it was different. Under the various colors of the words Google, were the words suggest and beta.
Now, I’m not a computer super genius, but I know the word beta is a code word for something that is in trial and something new.
Well, this new search engine likes to finish the search before you’ve even started.
Let me explain, say you wanted to look up (oh what’s a good topic) information on Terri Schiavo. You go to the search bar and type the letter t, and right under the search engine bar, a list of the most popular item beginning with the letter t appears with how many results Google has for you off to the right side of the new menu. So I type in Terri S, and before I know it, under my Terri S, is the hyperlink to search for Terri Schiavo. So I click that and get my results for Terri Schiavo.
So how does this work?
Well, according to Google Suggest’s FAQ, Google Suggest uses a step-by-step problem solving procedure to search the Internet and predict what the user is looking for.
An example of this type of algorithm is the Google Zeitgeist, which takes the most popular searches in the Google community and makes a top 10 list of the most gaining searches and the most declining searches.
As an example I typed in the letter T. As a result, under my search bar, Google suggested searches for Target, Ticketmaster, Travelocity and The OC.
However, Google Suggest does not make suggestions based on you personal search history. Instead it uses the popularity of searches to make its suggestion.
This is a new step in the right direction for technology and for search engines. This will make life easier for everyone, including those of us who can’t spell (like yours truly).
College students will be happy to know there is something out there that will help them with research papers. Many nights will now be spent working on papers instead of wasting time looking for a subject. Google Suggest is something for everyone.
To go to Google Suggest you can type suggest in the search window at Google.com or visit the following web site, http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en
Editors note: In order for Google Suggest to work, you must have Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. Go to http://labs.google.com/suggestfaq.html for more system specifications.
