Dear Editor,
I have had my differences with the Mad Wombat articles from time to time, but have never felt compelled to write regarding Mr. Chambers’ gross generalizations about the evils of Republicans, etc., because he is certainly entitled to his opinion.
However, he needs to get his facts straight regarding his most recent article on bankruptcy and bankruptcy law changes.
My problem is that your writer did not bother to even look up basic facts regarding the different chapters of bankruptcy.
In Chapter 7 you can still lose your house or your car, in Chapter 13 the way it is set up now what you’re doing is paying back a portion so you can keep equity in a house or car or even help pay back portions of a mortgage.
In either bankruptcy you can lose everything or nothing, but in 13 you are repaying so you don’t give up anything and you only have to pay back a portion of your debt.
In Chapter 7 you are sometimes allowed to “redeem” items by paying the trustee of your case a certain amount to protect what is not protected by your exemptions, however these are lump sum payments, while in Chapter 13 you can repay over a period of time.
I can ignore your general lambasting of conservatives, your general assumptions that all people of certain groups share the exact same values and your gross generalizations.
I can not, however, sit by and watch you inform a whole campus incorrectly and spread misinformation, when a little time and effort could have had you factually correct.
I hope that you will take Mr. Arnold’s lead and consider making a short correction in your next article.
The new law is horrible, even if you believe bankruptcy reform should happen, it certainly is not the way to go about it, but please get your facts straight.
