You may know The Donnas for their pop-punk attitudes and lyrics like, “I don’t wanna go to the mall, don’t wanna go to the movies, I think we have done it all, just take me to the backseat,” but their new album Gold Metal shows their newfound maturity and well-rounded musicianship.
The all-girl band went from punk-rock high school to dirty jeans ’70s rock ‘n’ roll. Of course this didn’t happen over night, but as a slow and smooth progression. They have made more relationship-driven songs on this record unlike the one-night-stand anthems of Spend the Night.
“Revolver” shows the most evidence of evolution, growth, instrumental range and development. It’s just plain different from anything The Donnas have done its just plain rock ‘n’ roll that is full of emotion.
The song gets its point across with the analogy, “You’ve got one foot in your mouth and one foot in the grave,” and the what-comes-around-goes-around attitude in the lines, “But it’s a matter of time, till you get yours and I get mine, it might not be me, but you’re gonna answer to somebody, revolver.”
The track “Out of My Hands” speaks of the strain touring put on a musician’s life, especially their romantic relationships. The lyrics “at the mercy of a mile” do a terrific job of illustrating the toll of the road has on a musician and the sacrifices that come with fame.
“Gold Metal” is the tile track. It deals with authenticity of being an artist and incorporates what The Donnas have been through and where they are now in their career.
They have always been great entertainers and had fun-to-sing-along-with girl anthems, but now they have proven themselves as talented artist with Gold Metal.
