Chantelle Vernon often thinks about one day running for Canada and maybe even becoming an Olympic athlete.
Teammates and colleagues have said that Vernon in one of ETSU’s most talented runners.
Her dedication and determination drive her to do her best. She has thought about running for Canada after graduation.
Vernon admires the runners who have made their dreams a reality by running for Canada.
“I have imagined myself in their position and how it would feel,” said Vernon. “Maybe one day my thoughts will become a reality. If they do, it will be a blessing.”
Not only would running for Canada be a blessing, but Vernon has also blessed ETSU with her track records. She once ran a 7.47 in the 60-meter dash.
“Self motivated and mentally strong people are who make it to the next level,” she said.
Vernon is focused on her running career at ETSU and the future.
“There have been many runners from Canada that have been underrated,” she said. “It takes a hard working and positive person to run for Canada.”
Other runners know not to underestimate Vernon. In 2004, she placed first at the Southern Conference meet after running 7.54 in the 60-meter dash. She was also Athlete of the Year in 1998.
“I would love to break a Canadian record,” she said. “That would be a big challenge, but I’m always up to a challenge.”
The world may watch Vernon run for Canada and maybe even the Olympics. When it is the Olympic year, anything can happen.
“People step up their game to another level,” she said. “Hopefully, I will be one of those athletes. Once you accomplish something, you always want to accomplish more. So if I make the Canadian team, I would want to take it to the highest level, which would be the Olympics.”
Vernon thinks about making this thought a reality. She keeps herself motivated with one thought in mind.
“My biggest dream is to represent my country in a world event and make people proud,” she said.
