“Duck”-hunting season officially opens at ETSU on Thursday when Sig Ep Black will look to knock off defending intramural flag football champions DuckSquad in Campus Recreation’s Game of the Week.
“This year we will be having a “game of the week” each Thursday night,” said Intramural Coordinator Chris Meister, “It will be what we think is the biggest match-up of the comp league for that week.”
Sig Ep and DuckSquad are no strangers to each other. They played each other twice in the Super Weekend Invitational last February with Sig Ep losing both games by a total of two points, including losing the tournament’s championship game in triple overtime. DuckSquad also defeated Sig Ep in preseason play last week by a score of 20-7.
Sig Ep’s assistant captain Brad Arlington is not intimidated by the DuckSquad’s success against Sig Ep or their 2004-05 record of 13-0. “We respect them as a reasonably good flag football team,” Arlington said. “We are not looking past them, but definitely not intimidated by them.”
Stopping the DuckSquad’s offense will be the key to the game for Sig Ep, “We need to figure out a defense to stop their offense. We just need to execute plays,” Arlington said.
Sig Ep has a highly explosive offense of their own, and that fact has DuckSquad coach Dustin Blazer looking forward to the game. “They can put points on the board real quick, but so can we,” Blazer said. “It will be a good game, it always is when these two teams play. I just hope we can leave everything on the field.”
Because of the DuckSquad’s success last season, they feel this year will bring even tougher competition. “We know there’s a target on our back,” said Gary Carver, captain of the DuckSquad. “Situations like this are tough when you open up the season against one of the best teams in the league. When you hit the ground running like this you have to come ready to play.”
Meister said a game like this is good for the program. “It is a game that everyone can get excited about,” she said. “I just hope that our staff is up to the challenge. We will be putting the best officials available on the field for the game,” she said with a slight chuckle.
Game time for this week’s Game of the Week is set for 10 p.m. on Campus Rec’s front yard.
