Dear Editor,
There has been a lot said by many people about this great ordeal over Ludacris that seems to be perplexing our campus, and city in general, but there are a couple of things that I think need to be pointed out.
First of all, about a quote from the article on the front page of the Johnson City Press, “I think it is more like prejudice. If it was a country singer, I don’t think they would cancel it.”
While I agree that they probably wouldn’t cancel a country singer, I don’t think the concert is being canceled because of prejudice.
At least if it is prejudice, it is not about music genre or race. Some people might remember that Johnson City would not let White Zombie and Filter perform in Freedom Hall.
So, what I am saying is that it’s not about race, and it’s not about rap music. Maybe it’s about something else, like profane lyrics and negative messages.
Secondly this so-called “vote” was made by a very small number of students. The only way that such a small percentage of the student body voting could represent the student body as a whole is if it were a random sample.
No one should be saying that this is what the students want. Maybe some do, but only a relatively small proportion.
If someone wants to know how the students really feel they should coordinate with the math department to take a survey that would give more accurate results.
Finally, I would like to say that I do not have a problem with Ludacris performing in Johnson City. What I do have a problem with is generalizations being made that are not necessarily true.
