Dear Editor,
In response to your column concerning apathy, I would first like to say that I do not believe you could be anymore true.
This generation seems to be carefree and careless about the happenings in the world. I must admit that I have been guilty of this apathetic attitude as well. However, I have been inspired by myself, and your column, to become more knowledgeable of the community and worldwide occurrences.
Young adults on a college campus tend to be so engrossed by routine activities, homework and spending time with their friends that they completely ignore the whole world outside of the university.
Just months ago another student and I were discussing the damage and tragedy that the tsunami had caused. The other student was completely oblivious of the tragic destruction and the many lives which were lost.
It is a shame that the next generation cannot take at least 15 minutes out of their daily schedule to read the newspaper or even listen to the local news while getting ready for class. However, we can spend countless hours on the telephone, instant messenger and checking our Facebook messages.
As a student, I would like to challenge myself and all other college students to end the curse of apathy and ignorance. We are not the “next generation.” We are the generation.
Do we want a whole generation of apathetic adults or a nation filled with knowledgeable citizens who will stand firm for their beliefs?
