In a rare departure from the usual senior show, Geoff Pratt will be holding a “one-night-only painting-stravaganza” on Dec. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at 221 W. Main Street.
Breaking from the traditional show for graduating seniors, which is held at ETSU’s Slocumb Gallery’s and lasts for an entire week, Pratt, a 23-year-old fine arts major, hopes to bring more attention to the intense and burning sense of immediacy that his work holds. “I am possibly the greatest artist who has ever and will ever live,” Pratt said.
Pratt’s show will consist of paintings and various other works on canvas, paper and other media. “I make art from the heart – a place of rainbow awesomeness. Come and be disappointed as your feeble mind attempts to comprehend my raw power.”
Chosen because it is a small, unassuming building in downtown Johnson City, the venue reflects the way that Pratt feels about his own work. “This grimy little building being full of the beauty I have produced is the same way that this grimy little body (indicating his own) is full of the beauty of art.”
Despite this being Pratt’s first major show, his hopes of its success are high, “Anyone that comes will be forever changed for the better. When one encounters such undeniable greatness, one cannot help but to come away changed. My art will blast away your mediocrity and leave you feeling so fresh and so clean.”
Refreshments will be provided for the reception
Based purely upon the artist’s flamboyant and inflammatory statements about himself and his work, this show promises to be an entertaining break from the grind and terror of the mythical dead week and the finals that follow.
Whether Pratt is the “greatest artist to ever have lived,” whether his artwork will “blast away your mediocrity” or whether you will be unable to comprehend his “raw power” remains to be seen, but the opportunity to find out is almost too much to pass up.
