I’ve been called a cynic. Then again, in today’s society . who hasn’t?
Cynicism is the new fad, the new black if you will. Everyone is spouting out gobs of it in music, in entertainment and, yes, even on CNN, “America’s most trusted news source.”
You, the non-cynics, have let the McCarthy Era fade whilst we, the cynics, have redefined the 21st century with V at our side. This is because the cynics of the world like to see things in a different way. We are often said to be insane, unrealistic and a bit on the liberal side.
When I told my mother and grandmother that I believed money should be made worthless and destroyed, well . they laughed.
But think about it. It’s creeping up in every corner of mass media. Of course, I personally have no objections to this new wave of bubble-like hysteria. Bring down George Bush, drop me on a deserted island and blast John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ and I’ll sit content with my pretentious self all day long. I won’t mind, really.
Something tells me that the majority of you might not feel the same. That brings me to my question, the real reason behind this column (which, by the way, thank you for reading), why do you, the conservatives, do nothing to stop it?
It seems that our opinions, the ones you hear ever so frequently, are not censored or delayed by judgment. Why should the same not be done for the conservative nation? That, my friends, is a question which only you can answer.
I’ve heard the East Tennessean called a ‘liberal rag’ and denounced for not having a word of worth therein. Where does the fault truly lie if a conservative opinion is not available? – God knows we wouldn’t mind having one. No, no, it isn’t that at all.
We, the lovely staff of the East Tennessean, do not sit around and snicker at our liberal, biased paper. Sadly, there is no interest during the application process for conservative writing. It’s liberal or nothing. Oh, but why?
Surely you have your opinions? Please tell me that my stereotyped idea of what a conservative truly is (a person without any artistic ability who is driven to success by wealth and popularity), is not one of accuracy. Give me that glimmer of hope for the human race and I’ll stop here. Because, in all honesty, I’m all out of theories.
This viewpoint section is a gift to the university. It is my chance, your chance, our chance to speak up – to be heard.
Whether what you have to say mirrors a Jeffersonian or Hamiltonian view, it is valuable to this publication. Personally, I’d love to have someone give me a good, solid rebuttal from time to time. Send the ball flying back into my court on risqu topics. Or just let yourself be heard.
With 12,000 copies of the East Tennessean being printed every week, the opportunity for conservative members of this university to be heard is in obvious reach.
There are no predetermined prejudices waiting for you at the door of the East Tennessean office.
You only show up in your occasional ‘Letters to the Editor,’ which are highly valued and appreciated. Still, here’s your opportunity to do something more.
Don’t write in with petty insults, but instead broadcast your opinion to the entire campus in an intelligent and more educated manner.
Challenge me here, on these pages, so that the cynicism of the world, one being taken over by democrats and, as many believe, culturally mutilated by liberals, no longer has the upper hand. As they say, if you can’t beat them, join them.
I welcome your opinion as a way to show that there are two sides to every coin. That is, of course, until I have currency destroyed once and for all.
