What are your plans after you graduate? Many students, especially seniors, are asked this question more and more often as graduation quickly approaches. For these students, attending Graduation Celebration: Real World 101 may help them find the answer.
The event, scheduled for Tuesday, March 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center Ballroom, “Will be a vital function for any graduating student to attend as well as those with enough hours to classify them as a junior,” according to a press release.
“It’s a really fun day and it’s a good atmosphere,” said Lee Ann Davis, director of university alumni programs at ETSU.
Davis said ETSU’s alumni association has been putting on the event for the past two years, and while the event is planned for graduating seniors, it is open to anyone. “Students in the past have said that it’s a lot of fun.”
During the event, students will be able to order their college ring, get appropriate hair, makeup and fashion tips to show them what is appropriate and in style to wear to an interview, and pick up their caps and gowns, Davis said.
After picking up their caps and gowns, students can proceed to the bookstore’s decorating station to adorn their cap before getting a photographer to take formal cap-and-gown pictures or casual pictures, either by themselves or with a group of friends.
Additionally, “students will be able to bring their resume to the ‘rsum doctors’ to have human resource professionals in the fields of health care, government and social services, education and federal employment review their rsums and make suggestions,” according to a press release.
“It’s just a neat thing for anyone who’s going into the job market to have advice from professionals in their field about key words to put in their resumes,” Davis said.
“I definitely think this would be something worthwhile to go to because we have our rsums up to university standards but we need to have them up to professional standards,” said senior Abby Keck, an education major who is graduating in May. “I think it could be a big help.”
Davis said there would also be food and a disc jockey at the event, as well as door prizes such as a diploma frame from ETSU’s bookstore, an iPod, and a bracelet from Tiffany & Co.
Representatives from other ETSU organizations such as the graduate school, Pirate Club, financial aid, Career Placement and Internship Services will also be available to answer students’ questions about furthering their education, doing exit interviews and learning about the career building programs offered.
“Here our up-and-coming grads will learn how to look, dress and act in the business world,” the press release said.
