Unfair senate treatmentDear Editor,
I am writing to express my disappointment in the conduct of the SGA Senator’s meeting that took place on March 20. I want all students to know how my organization was treated at this meeting, as they may face the same treatment someday.
My organization was requesting funding for our annual national conference. I understand that funds are limited and guidelines are used to determine which organizations receive funding. I am not writing to complain that my organization did not receive funding, but to address the fact that we were overlooked and humiliated by the actions of the senate.
Our organization was up for discussion because of a misunderstanding in the amount of funding being requested. Had we been given the chance to explain ourselves, we may have been able to reach an understanding with all senate members.
However, we were dismissed without any consideration being given to our organization. After waiting patiently through all other discussions, we were not given the same respect when it was our turn. Senators used the fact that their meetings are run under “Robert’s Rules of Order” to quickly dismiss the subject of our organization without giving us the chance to represent ourselves. I understand that we were approaching the end of the meeting at this time but that was no excuse to treat our organization in such a manner. The impression is given that the SGA is to represent the student body in a fair and just manner, which is why we vote on the members.
To quote the SGA Web site, “Over the years Student Government has helped students in seeing that their voices are heard.” Sadly, my voice was not allowed to be heard at the last meeting and my organization will suffer as a result.
