The winning streak is still alive.
The volleyball team extended their home winning streak to 11 last night against UNC-Asheville.
ETSU won in five games, 29-31, 31-29, 25-30, 30-18, 15-10. Callie Kiselech led the Bucs with 20 kills, Desiree Dyck had 14 and Laura Waddell chipped in with 10.
The first game was back and forth. The Bucs came out and grabbed the lead quickly and UNCA roared back.
The two teams kept it within one point for a while until the very end of the game and the Bulldogs pulled out a win despite the great save by Kaena Apana.
The second game was more of the first except ETSU won.
The two teams kept it close and Kristan Provchy helped immensely with her defense. She had 11 kills total.
After halftime, the Bucs were a little slow on the draw as they fell behind quickly 6-1.
It seemed like they were to far behind to catch up. But, they did claim a short lead until UNCA took over.
“We just lost our focus. We just needed more focus on the defense,” said coach Lindsey Devine.
The fourth game was a lot of ETSU. UNCA looked tired. The two teams kept it close in the middle of the game but ETSU pulled away and won by 13 points.
Whitney Cogburn came in the game and was an instant spark. She provided six kills, three digs and one timely block.
“She is always the gamer. She was what we needed at that moment,” Devine said.
“Whitney is always the unexpected one. Every time she comes in it’s a kill. I am so proud of her tonight,” said Amanda Youell.
The last game was all ETSU. They won three straight service points and never looked back.
“I have to give credit to UNCA. They came to play tonight,” said Devine.
“I have to give credit to the rest of the team. They helped me out a lot. I just put the ball in play,” said Cogburn.
The Bucs open conference play this weekend. “I think we are ready if we just focus on the fundamentals. We are excited about starting conference, it seems like we have been playing forever.”
“We have big shoes to fill from last year. A lot of good people left and we are so young, it is going to be fun and exciting,” said Cogburn.
Youell is going to be really pumped up because she is playing against her former team.
She just recently transferred from Jacksonville. “It is going to be interesting. I am excited to keep the win streak going. We didn’t want to lose tonight and we hope to win in three on Friday,” she said.
The Bucs play Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
