Dear. Editor,
I am writing in response to Michael D. Hutton’s letter in the Jan. 29 edition of the East Tennessean.
I find it interesting that he points out that SGA is misrepresenting the student body when in fact he is no longer a part of the organization, therefore he has no idea what goes on behind the scenes. The SGA is currently working, and has been working, on the behalf of the student body.
The Student Government has a representative on many of the university committees. For example, the SGA has representatives in the Disability Issues Committee, ETSU Commission for Women, Parking, Traffic and Security Committee, Race Relations and the University Wellness committee. These representatives from the SGA go to the university committees then report back to the SGA for further action. As a former senator, Mr. Hutton should have known that representatives from the SGA are campaigning for student rights, needs and wants all over campus, not just in the Tuesday meetings.
Also, the SGA has been funding several activities in collaboration with other campus organizations such as: I Heart Female Orgasm, the Robert Spencer Lecture and Open Range Day just to name a few. So he can’t say that the students have nothing to show for the student activity fees they paid. Had Mr. Hutton actually read the constitution (which is available online at the SGA Web site) when he was a senator, he would already know how the student activities monies are used.
As a former member of the SGA, I understand how the organization works. It annoys me when people make comments about the organization under the entirely wrong assumptions. And to be clear, Mr. Hutton’s assumptions are wrong and his comments are wrong. I ask only this for the future, that you get all the facts before insulting a person and an organization.
