Though born in South Korea, Jonathan Jung of Lee University is a New Zealand-based pianist and is scheduled to visit Johnson City for a recital performance at ETSU on Aug. 30.

Jung features solo piano works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Scriabin and Vine. As a devoted chamber musician, he continues to write music for a vast range of instruments. Jung’s own compositions have been performed in locations such as the University of Southern Mississippi, Tulane University, Carnegie Hall, Hatch Recital Hall and Brevard Music Center.

Globally, Jung’s performances have continued to gain an enormous amount of attention. Dr. Jung’s recitals have been often described as “virtuosic” and “truly moving.”

Jung’s most recently reviewed recital at at Carnegie Hall led New York Concert Review to write, “[Mr. Jung’s] four pieces are (no title), ‘Illuminate,’ ‘Sanctus’ and ‘Agnus Dei.’ There is a strong French influence in the first three; the first two have striking Debussyian qualities and the third reminds one of Milhaud. The piano part is virtuosic; there is no “hack-in-the-back” anywhere to be found in any of the selections. The fourth piece, the ‘Agnus Dei,’ was much more individualistic, with a mournful sound that was truly moving.”

Jung previously taught at Southwestern Oklahoma State University before transitioning to Lee University’s staff as an assistant piano professor in 2017. Aside from teaching, Jung regularly concertizes across New Zealand, the U.S., Japan and Australia.

Outside of composition, Jung holds a strong passion for collecting rare, historical music recordings that date back to the early 20th century. This admiration allows him to morph together his love of music theory and music analysis to create an overall focus.
