The Student Government Association held a scheduled meeting on Tuesday and voted on the appointment of a new senator as well as the last Buc Fund applications of the month.

The Senate discussed and approved BUC Fund applications.

The BUC Fund committee meeting the week before addressed three applications, which were then taken to the Senate for final approval and payment. These three requests were from Pi Sigma Alpha, Shades of Africa and Buccaneer Anime Club. Each organization sought funding for events and organizational needs.

Pi Sigma Alpha’s request for $29,000 was thrown out due to issues arising out of the previous semester. Secretary of Allocations Adam Rosenbalm explained that the political science honor society was currently under sanction by the SGA for failing to appear in previous meetings. These sanctions were leveled last semester and bar the organization from receiving BUC Funding this semester as well.

Shades of Africa requested $7,525 for a cultural exchange event titled “Africa Night” involving games, African culture showcases and a homecoming-style King and Queen. The BUC Fund committee recommended that $7,530 be given to the organization. After discussion the Senate voted to grant $7,380, $150 under the recommendation, citing that the cash prizes to the King and Queen could be reduced to save money.  The vote passed with 19 in favor, none opposed and one abstention.

The Buccaneer Anime Club asked for assistance in running a movie night that would require food and buying the rights to show the film. The requested amount was $400, and $200 was recommended by the committee. The Senate moved to grant $250 on the understanding that the funds would be used for the movie rights, and the vote passed with 19 in favor, none opposed and one abstention.

Applications are now done on a rolling schedule according to the SGA Legislation website, and established organizations are subject to committee interview and a Senate vote.

The senate then opened the floor to a presentation by Vanessa Smith, Center Manager of ETSU’s University Health Center. Smith described the services offered to students, as well as upcoming plans and fee increases regarding the center. Afterwards the floor was yielded to Homecoming Chair and Secretary of State Roxy Reed, who described the plans for homecoming and encouraged SGA members to get involved.

Afterwards the Senate moved to the matter of appointing Emily Shelton as a new senator. The vote passed with 20 in favor, none opposed, no abstentions. Shelton was sworn in and became the SGA’s 26th senator. With a new voter in the room, the SGA moved two new resolutions to committee, one to construct skateboard racks across campus and the other to allow American Sign Language classes to fulfill foreign language requirements.

With the agenda addressed, the meeting was adjourned at 5:03 p.m.
