In a quick turnaround after defeating Davidson College on Saturday morning, the ETSU women’s tennis team took to the courts again. On Sunday, Jan. 26, the Bucs faced the Virginia Tech Hokies to unfortunately fall by the score of 6-1 in singles play and dropping to an overall record of 1-2.

The Hokies got off to a fiery start in singles play, capturing five of the first six singles sets. Buccaneers freshman Michelle de Haan (Drenthe, Netherlands) managed to force Virginia Tech’s Shene Disbergen (Southwest Ranches, Florida) into three sets, but eventually fell by a score of 6-4 in their third set.

Buccaneers sophomore Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) also took the Hokies’ freshman Erika Cheng (São Paulo, Brazil) into three sets, but Cheng eventually prevailed, dropping Elizarraras by a score of 6-3 in the third set.

In the Buccaneers’ lone singles victory, Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain), the lone senior on the ETSU roster, managed to edge by Virginia Tech’s Elizabet Danailova (Sofia, Bulgaria) in an exciting super tie-break after two sets, winning 11-9.

In doubles play, the ETSU duo of sophomore Raqael Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) and Pascual-Larrinaga fell to the Hokies by the score of 6-3. The Buccaneers’ Elizarraras and Haan managed to keep things competitive but eventually fell by a score of 6-4 to the Hokies.

While ETSU falls to an overall record of 1-2 on the season, the Hokies went on to defeat Appalachian State in a doubleheader and move on to a 2-0 overall record.

While the Buccaneers began their season with three straight road matches, they will get to travel back home and prepare to face the Georgia State Panthers on Friday, Feb. 7. While the matches are expected to start at noon, the exact location of the matches remains to be determined, due to potential weather concerns.
