During the week of Feb. 2, Maring was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week.

“I’m not really somebody who focuses on getting awards,” Maring said. “For myself, I work really hard in practice, I want to get better every single day. What pushes me really hard is to see that I am improving. It’s my job to block those balls, so I have to do my job. That’s what pushes me; when I do my job, the rest of the team can do their job, so that’s how we win.”

The Buccaneers played Furman on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, taking the win both days with the scores of 3-2 and 3-1, starting off the season strong.

“Every day in practice we get better, we work really hard and I think the team expectation is finally winning the championship and getting that ring, for sure,” Maring said. “We definitely take it very seriously and we want to win every single weekend.”

Playing the sport you love is naturally exciting, and for Maring, it is her senior year — the last season she will be playing in college.

“It’s my last year as a senior,” Maring said. “Where I came from it taught me that it’s important to work hard every single day, but also have fun. For me, having a great last season, making it fun but working really hard towards winning the championships.”

Volleyball is a family sport for the Maring family, as her father, sisters and brother all play volleyball.

“It is one of the most amazing things because whenever we’re home, we are always playing volleyball,” Maring said. “We would set up the net in the backyard and we would always play volleyball with everyone. It’s fun to have that same thing that everyone loves and share it with each other.”

“The feeling when you work on something really hard in practice and you do it in the game and it is successful, and you succeed as a team.” Maring explained, when asked what her favorite part about volleyball was.

“Once you are successful, that team feeling of counting on each other, that’s what I love,” Maring said.
